2011 Take Home a Nude Auction and Gala at Sothebys

Here I am looking like a boss next to my work “Black Magic” on the walls of Sothebys for the 2011 Take Home a Nude Auction and Gala. THAN is one of two annual fundraisers for the New York Academy of Art and I have had the honor of participating for the past four years. The New York Academy of Art, year after year, has been taking great artists and turning them into extraordinary artists.

Thank you to the super talented Mark Von Holden for the photo and to the Academy for including my work again.

Chronogram June 2009

The unique name of Sparrow, the author of this full-page article about Dzul Dance in the June 2009 Chronogram, helped facilitate an introduction when, at a birthday party, I saw the name on the cake and thought to myself “how many Sparrow’s are there?” I asked our host if Sparow wrote for Chronogram and indeed he did.

I pulled up the tearsheet of the article on my iPhone and introduced myself to Sparrow who doesn’t live in the area and had never seen the printed article until our introduction. His daughter, who goes to Bard exclaimed “whoa!” when she saw the article.

For the second year in a row, Matthew McMullen Smith’s work was sold at silent auction at the New York Academy of Art’s Take Home a Nude annual gala.

The New York Academy of Art’s 18th Annual Art Auction Benefit, Take Home a Nude®, held on Wednesday, October 7th at Sotheby’s featured cocktails, music, dinner, and both a silent and live auction of drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculptures by both emerging and leading contemporary artists. This year’s participating artists include Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl, Jeff Koons, James Nares, Jenny Saville, Kenny Scharf, Donald Sultan, and many others.

Matthew McMullen Smith’s 2009 selection which was auctioned at Sotheby’s was Untitled #3 from The Smoke Series, a 20″x20″ single-edition Digital C-Print.

Shrouded Figure, a 11×14 single-edition archiva inkjet print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl, sold at the 2008 Take Home a Nude gala held at Phips de Pury to a couple who were such fans of the work they stood in front of the bid sheet, keeping others from bidding.

Matthew McMullen Smith was one of the fifteen B & W Magazine Excellence Award winners in the 2009 Portfolio Contest. Seven photos were featured in Special Issue #68. As well, the photo Shallow the Halo was used in the magazine’s table of contents as the teaser for the Excellence Awards section.
